Freya Shaw

Finance Trustee

Freya brings both personal insight and developing professional expertise to her role as a trustee of Havenswood Trust.

During her early childhood, Freya’s parents were foster carers, which meant she grew up alongside children from a wide range of backgrounds, including those who were neurodivergent or living with physical and mental disabilities. This early exposure gave her a strong understanding of the challenges faced by these children, as well as the gaps in support that still exist.

While in sixth form, Freya volunteered with Ryedale Special Families, a local charity supporting children and young people with additional needs and their families. She initially supported day trips before progressing to providing one-to-one support for individuals. This hands-on experience was instrumental in deepening her understanding of the day-to-day realities faced by both young people and their parents.

Although Freya has chosen to pursue a career outside of the social sector, she is passionate about using her skills in accountancy to support Havenswood Trust. She is currently training to become a Chartered Accountant through an apprenticeship and has gained experience working with a variety of organisations, including those in the education sector.

Freya has a strong interest in the charity sector, recognising it as an opportunity to apply her professional skills in a way that aligns with her personal values and creates meaningful, tangible impact. She is particularly inspired by Havenswood Trust’s mission, believing deeply in the importance of children accessing education that works with them, rather than against them.

Outside of her professional and trustee role, Freya enjoys spending time outdoors. She is a keen runner and swimmer, regularly taking part in local park runs, attending running clubs, and enjoys long walks along the coast.
