Havenswood Climbers

Our climbing community offers a welcoming and supportive space for young people aged 8–14 years to come together, build confidence and make genuine friendships through shared adventure.

The group is designed specifically for neurodivergent children who are out of school, struggling to attend, or are regularly missing lessons and school-based social opportunities. It is also for those who struggle socially, find mixing with others challenging or making friends difficult. To ensure we remain true to this purpose and can prioritise those with the greatest need, we do need to apply this criteria consistently when allocating places. Our aim is to build confidence, friendships and positive social interaction where these opportunities may otherwise be limited.

Held on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Sundays of each month at The Street Community Centre in Scarborough, sessions are intentionally kept small to create a calm, low-pressure environment where children can feel safe and comfortable without sensory overwhelm. Climbing provides a natural way to develop resilience, problem-solving skills and self-belief, while also encouraging teamwork, communication and social connection.

Whether participants are new to climbing or already enjoy it, the focus is on belonging, encouragement and having fun together while growing in confidence both on and off the wall.

All sessions are supervised by qualified belayers who are also experienced in caring for and supporting children with neurodiverse profiles. Each session involves climbing wall experience and learning practical skills in the boulder room.

For those who would like to develop their climbing further, we offer children the opportunity to work towards personal improvement goals at their own pace. Each child can set individual targets, track their progress and build their official climbing record, helping them see just how far they’ve come.

Alongside developing technique and confidence on the wall, sessions also include learning how to belay safely with supervision and how to tie essential climbing knots, giving young people valuable practical skills, a strong sense of responsibility and a deeper understanding of the sport.
