Annette Benstead

Annette brings over 20 years of experience in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) to Havenswood.

Annette holds both a BA (Hons) and a Master’s Degree in Special Educational Needs, giving her not only a deep theoretical understanding of key issues and legislation, but also extensive experience of applying this in practice while supporting parents, children, young people, and professionals. She began her career with a national charity, where she spent four years advising, supporting, and representing parents at SEND Tribunals, and then moved into the statutory sector, working in local government for 14 years.

Annette is now widely know across multiple counties in the field of SEND, respected and sought after for her depth of knowledge, practical expertise, and commitment to improving outcomes for neurodivergent children and their families.

She played a central role in implementing the 2014 Act and Code of Practice within a local authority and has a thorough knowledge of the processes surrounding Statements of SEN and Education, Health and Care Plans. Annette has represented in more than 200 SEND Tribunals, though she always seeks early resolution to ensure children and young people quickly receive the support they need.

Throughout her career, Annette has worked in close partnership with parent carers, schools, and professionals, building strong networks locally and beyond. She has also been a key figure in SENCo forums, offering training, advice, and support to schools navigating SEND processes.

Annette is married with two children, two grandchildren, and three dogs. She enjoys keeping fit, cycling, and watching rugby league (a loyal Hull FC supporter), and of course loves getting out for long walks with the dogs.

We are grateful and privileged to have Annette as part of our Trustee Team.
